What are the subjects that I consider essential?
Those that have to do with notions of sexuality, spirituality, and our nervousness about death.
Overt political art doesn't interest me.
I think it's better if you can trick people, if the topic is presented in a subversive way.
Then you can catch their interest with beauty, and they will think more about it later on.
It will rise up within them, the hidden meaning.
They will see what they need to see.
what each of us as artists has is a unique perspective, making art is the ability to get the wild dreaming into a substance and out into the world in a way that connects to other people's hearts, minds and souls...

for me that's real magic no tricks
When I use the word 'trick', I really mean seduce.
ReplyDeleteI want to seduce my viewer into looking more closely at my work, into coming closer and examining the details yes. But also, by wanting to touch my work once they are close (but not allowing themselves to because they are polite) but that yearning or whatever - that tactile ness sends them into a more physical reaction to the work which leads to an emotional reaction...and maybe even a place where they 'get' it. They don't get what I'm saying so much as what they need to say.
This piece for example, is about the sky. It's about the rush of dark birds that move quickly and in unison so quickly in front of us, connected by some intuition. It's that feeling of surprise, awe - whatever that we have when confronted by the beauty and intelligence of nature. On another level, these are black birds. They darken that blue sky. They might be seen as an omen.
It just depends on how you want to read the image. What I want to do with my work is make it attractive enough so that people slow down and access what they need to from it. I am concerned about communication with self.
