I don't change the material, I follow its lead.
I want to work with touch.
I think about the idea of skin.
...not a product of thought.
... a product of the body.
Breath is close to that idea.

time passes over the earth
breathing
forest
tenderness
time passes over the earth
the weight
tight with the turbulent stuff
compact
essential
substantial
delicate
watchful
strenuous
dust of the world
solitude
exile
life and earth

tenderness

tight with the turbulent stuff

stitched painting
"People don't always want to talk about real things. There are so many conversations that cannot happen. Every now and then I get to have intimate conversations. In between, I enjoy painting. Painting offers me everything and I take full advantage of it."
Lucy Mink Cavello
"All the other things in my life are hard, but painting is not."

story cloth
I've been given a zillion men's ties.
100 percent silk are on one wall.
100 percent polyester are on another.
There are maybe two or three that are blends - I deal with those intuitively and logically.
Sorting.
Looking.
My husband peeks in and says...."This is totally off track . What are you doing???"
I have no answer.
Maybe, I have an idea to make star maps.
They were given to me by a nurse who worked 20 years in a nursing home.
I can well imagine where these ties came from and all the stories that surround each one.

gift cloth
Anni Albers tells us that textiles used to have two main uses. Clothing and shelter.
This makes me re-think so much.
Cloth has played many roles in ritual, symbol, political and social power, and in our daily domestic lives. Considering the story of the materials I choose to use in this wider aspect, I am given new ways to work with them on a conceptual level.
I want to make physical objects with materials that can be touched and felt that yield more thoughts and imaginings than one can possibly understand.

At the Same Time
To be liminal does not mean to be off center, rather it means that
At The Same Time
We Are IN The Centre
And At The EDGE
At The Same Time
We Are IN The Centre
And At The EDGE

if you can trick people
What are the subjects that I consider essential?
Those that have to do with notions of sexuality, spirituality, and our nervousness about death.
Overt political art doesn't interest me.
I think it's better if you can trick people, if the topic is presented in a subversive way.
Then you can catch their interest with beauty, and they will think more about it later on.
It will rise up within them, the hidden meaning.
They will see what they need to see.
