Variations on prayers

When an artist is making a work, I’m not sure how much they can actually think about the audience.  The degree of communication is always a dubious question.  I try to pay attention to the integrity of the work and worry about translation later.  The most successful work I’ve done is where it is completely open to interpretation.  It doesn’t dictate one way of making.  Sherin Neshat

Mermaid or Princess

The ambiguity goes beyond a simple combining of opposites and instead engages the viewer in an experience of slipping from one association to another in an unrelated and unsolvable process of interpretation.

Trying to make sense of nonsense

70 inches square instead of 80 because I don’t want to have to go up and down on the stool.

Only as high and as wide as I can reach.  My body as measure.

Look at the sky

My creativity will not stop, even when my spirit is anxious and sad, my interior huge-ness will not give up and continues to make hopeful declarations about not giving up.

streaming

May what I do flow from me like a river.

The way it is with children.

Then in the swelling and ebbing currents, these deepening tides moving out, returning,

I will sing you as no one ever has,

Streaming through widening channels into the open sea.

I could see everything

Freed from deadlines, I saw that I can go somewhere deeper if I give myself enough time to let my mind catch up with my hands - and not push the work too hard.

I followed the work slowly.  Hoping. Having faith that it would lead to something more true than I could have conceived of quickly.
