so many artists talk about the feeling that they are a conduit for the art -- that they don't know where it's come from, but it came through them -- this seems to parallel Estes idea of "must" -- that art is not an act of will but of necessity. i probably would argue a little bit against "not an act of will" because as one artist once said, "inspiration needs to find me working" -- it takes a great deal of will to actually get pieces made from start to finish, the artist most certainly must provide the will. i'm curious about the context of the Estes quote.
